Wellington Kindergartens

All teachers in Wellington Kindergartens are covered by the pay and conditions as stated in the National Collective Employment Agreement for Kindergarten Teachers, negotiated by NZEI: Te Riu Roa. This is one of the few collective agreements in the Early Childhood Sector and provides national coverage for a national service. This agreement also includes a commitment by the Government to pay parity for kindergarten teachers (with primary and secondary teachers) and this was fully implemented in 2006. Also all Kindergarten teachers are covered by the State Sector Act and therefore employment negotiations are carried out directly with the Ministry of Education, rather than with individual managers.

All our kindergartens employ support staff who are involved in administration or general teacher assistance. Our support staff are covered by pay and conditions as stated in either:

State Sector Retirement Savings Scheme (SSRSS) is a voluntary savings plan specially designed for the State Sector, including the Education Service. The Scheme was launched in 2004 and has over 31,000 members. You are eligible to join an SSRSS Scheme if you are a registered teacher in a free kindergarten association. All staff, on recruitment, are given information about joining SSRSS. For general enquiries about SSRSS, staff members can phone the Ministry of Education on 04 463 838.
