About the Kindergarten
Island Bay Kindergarten was established in 1949 on the site of Island Bay School in a spacious school classroom block.
Island Bay Kindergarten is part of a reorganisation initiative that began at the start of Term 2, 2007. Because of population growth in the area and pressure on kindergarten spaces, the kindergarten had major renovations completed in 2007 to commodate two centres and a playgroup.
There are now three services running alongside each other: Isola - a playgroup which runs each morning and shares the Kura Pepe space; Kura Pepe and Kura Tamaiti which each have a separate all day licence and a group size of 30. Kura Pepe, Kura Tamaiti and Isola all offer different hours to give choice to families (see Kura Pepe and Isola for their session times).
One Head Teacher is the leader of the teaching teams at Island Bay and she works collaboratively with teaching teams, the Playgroup Coordinator and parents to ensure smooth running and transitions of all three services.
