The Role of Committees

Kindergartens are run by a committee of parents and whānau who are elected annually. The committee is responsible for fundraising, applying for grants, simple maintenance and generally supporting the teachers. New committee members are welcome at any time during the year, and it is a great way to get to know people, to learn more about the environment your child is growing up in and to participate in your committee. Kindergartens thrive with the support of parents/whānau and the committee.

Local committees are responsible to the Association for the management, fundraising, maintenance of buildings, grounds and equipment and other matters not related to the curriculum and professional/personnel issues.

Committees and teachers support each other and cooperate to ensure the smooth running of the kindergarten.

Local committee meetings are held once a month in kindergartens, usually outside the times teachers are working with children.

When electing Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer for the local committee, it is preferred that they have a child attending kindergarten for the major part of the year. Teachers need regular interaction with office holders and if they do not have a child attending contact is sometimes difficult.

For more information on committees, talk to the teachers or refer to Information Booklet for Committees and Financial Management Manual (this replaces the  Information Booklet for Treasurers).

A Facilities Manual relating to property matters is kept in each kindergarten. This is presently under review.  After committees are elected the following forms should be completed and sent to the Association
